This holiday season Sam and I decided we wanted to give back by donating our time and effort to the homeless in LA. It’s easy to get caught up in our own lives. Giving back is a good way to help people and it often times makes you more thankful for things you do have.

I’ve spent a lot of time volunteering at community based charities like food banks, half-way houses, missions that feed the homeless and at a center for victims of child sexual abuse (by far the most heartbreaking yet fulfilling year of my life). This year Sam and I wanted to do something that made both of us feel even more personally involved.  We  ran through multiple ideas but ultimately settled on giving out Necessities Bags to the homeless. We spent two days stocking up supplies and putting together 100 care packages to pass out to the homeless. Instead of just going down to Skid Row, we decided to spend a few days driving around the greater Los Angeles area to service the thousands of people living on the streets.  Even if you can only afford to get a few of these items and don’t have any time to donate passing them out you can keep them in your car and give them to the people you see at stoplights or on the sidewalk. This is something Sam and I will be doing from now on. It’s an easy way to help someone in need year round.

Our bags include :

Two water bottles

1 pair of socks

Granola bars

Toilet paper

Goldfish crackers

Potato crisps

Wet wipes

A toothbrush

Mini chocolate candy

Items to pass out as needed :

Pet food

Getting involved in your community is easy and doesn’t have to take up your time and money if you don’t have that to give. You can help by simply donating items like socks, gently warn outerwear, blankets, scarves, mittens, beanies, toys, and hygienic supplies to your local shelter. Consider also donating your efforts to other community based organizations like Food Banks, Youth Centers, Health Clinics, Soup Kitchens, Local Churches, Women’s Centers and other small groups that work to help people in your community.

You can also donate to the victims of the various disasters and tragedies that have happened this year. The victims of the recent hurricanes, fires, earthquakes, and tragedies like the Las Vegas shooting still need our help.

You can use Charity Navigator to find reputable community based charities that work on causes near and dear to you.

Today I wanted to share a quick little glimpse into one of our recent adventures with BabyBlue. We took her up to secluded ranch where we enjoyed a quite day of hiking, BBQing, and sunset watching. I love having a camper van for those moments when we want to escape from the world and get lost.

Happy Friday!

Late last week we flew to Miami for Art Basel to soak in the art, discover new artists, and help Sam get his creative juices flowing. If you don’t know, Sam is actually a fine artist with an actual fine art degree. He paints stylized photorealism and he is an incredible artist who has put his own career on hold for this blogging venture. We’re working on changing that. After getting our fill of Miami we rented a car and drove to Key West where we very promptly realized we wanted to elope. This was the day before our elopement. I decided to get extra dressed up while we explored The Keys. I’ll be sharing photos from Art Basel and our elopement throughout the next few weeks so come back and check in.

On a slightly more serious note, I had a very bad fall down a flight of stairs the first night in Miami on our way to dinner. I wish I could blame it on high heels or drinking but in reality I just slipped and skidded all the way down some sharp marble steps. If you’ve seen my Snapchats you know just how bad it looks. Half of my right leg is black and blue from the ankle all the way to the knee. The left leg faired better with just a few large bruises around the ankle. I do not alter my body in Photoshop. Period. If I think my arm looks “fat” in a photo, I don’t use it. It’s an issue that is really important to me. Not to say that there weren’t times a few years back where I did feel the need to do so, but I have stopped and refuse to alter my body with photoshop or similar apps. This bruise however is horrendous and I made the decision that it was too distracting and just plain ugly. So I will be photoshopping the bruise for the next few months. It’s a bit of an ethical dilemma for me but I really just don’t think anyone wants to see this monstrosity in every blog post.

I want to make it clear that this post is in no way shaming or throwing shade at those who choose to photoshop their bodies. Our society puts so much pressure on all of us took like picture perfect Barbies, it’s near impossible to not fall into that trap. I myself have done it in the past. I still edit my photos with Lightroom to fix the lighting and I’ll photoshop a hive or pimple here and there. But if I’m unhappy about my body in a picture then it either does not get used or I remind myself to put down that donut and hit the gym. Basically I just wanted to be upfront with this and I hope you all understand where I’m coming from.

DESERT-KIDS_1 DESERT-KIDS_2 DESERT-KIDS_3 DESERT-KIDS_4 DESERT-KIDS_5 DESERT-KIDS_6Sam and I are weird. We spend pretty much 24/7 together and we don’t seem to get sick of each other. That isn’t to say that we don’t have our share of fights or moments where we may or may not want to strangle each other, but somehow we still end up having a difficult time being apart. This was one of the main reasons behind our decision to work together on the blog. Everything we do is used as an opportunity to spend time together. It’s completely impossible for either of us to imagine life without the other. It’s both scary and wonderful. I guess what I’m trying to say is that I feel damn lucky to have met him and proud of myself for seeing him across the bar all those years ago and making my move. Yes, I approached and pursued him in a bar on Valentine’s Day. We never even went on a real date before saying “I love you”. All this after only two weeks having known each other.  It was the best decision I have ever made under the influence of beer. Probably the best decision I’ve made thus far.

I hope each and every one of you finds a loving partner you all deserve. I hope that you don’t waste time waiting for someone else to approach you. I hope this encourages you to make the move.
When you know what you want there’s never a reason to not go after it (or in my case him).

Over the long weekend I had the pleasure of hosting my little munchkin for an extended sleepover. I love having her over. She’s a miniature me, but with much better dancing skills.
On Saturday we all went to the beach to watch the sunset, of course the little monkey spent her time jumping and dancing in the sand.
